  • Indoor mapping startup Situm raised €750,000 from Amadeus Ventures, Unirisco and Xesgalicia

  • El Pais profiled PLD Space, a Valencia-based startup that builds small satellites
  • Parking startup Valeet closed 2017 with €1.25 million in funding and is already live in the US
  • El Confidencial profiled Baluwo, a Spanish startup that wants to make it easier for Africans to receive physical remittances. The company raised funding from SeedRocket4Founders and Cabiedes very recently
  • The same newspaper also published a profile of Siguetuliga, a social-network-turned-SaaS product for professional football clubs and fans

  • Apple is looking for a new managing director in Spain
  • Zity, the new carsharing service from Ferrovial and Renault, is live in Madrid. There are now three companies serving Madrid’s metropolitan area: Car2go, Emov and Zity
  • El Ganso is using AI technology from Anlyticalways to decide how to display clothes at its retail stores
  • Chinese travel company Ctrip signed a partnership with Destinia to expand in Europe

Big (foreign) company news 🏦

  • Brussels came in favour of the taxi industry last week, as it claimed that Uber is a transportation company and thus it should be regulated as such, including the employee status of its drivers. Taxi association Fedetaxi is happy with the outcome. Cabify is not and says it operates a fully legal business model
  • It’s still not clear how the above could affect other ‘gig economy’ startups such as Deliveroo or Airbnb
  • Spanish union UGT is pushing regulators to look at the business models of Deliveroo, Glovo, UberEats and Stuart
  • Amazon is buying rights to several Spanish TV shows
