Startup funding news 💸

  • Barcelona-based Onna Technologies raised €9.8 million for its internal enterprise search engine. The round was led by Dawn Capital, with participation from Dropbox, the Slack Fund, and existing early investor, Nauta Capital
  • Travel store Pangea raised €9 million from Axon Partners. The company combines an offline retail and online travel agency strategy
  • Barcelona-based fintech startup Verse raised €7 million. The round was led by Greycroft Partners and other funds also participated, such as Expon Capital, Nikesh Arora, Alan Patricof (founder of Apax Partners), Martin Varsavsky, David Stern (former director of the NBA) and Charlie Songhurst
  • Barcelona-based lifelong learning startup Learnlife raised €3.1 million
  • Insurtech startup SingularCover raised €1.8 million from Antai Venture Builder and German investor Global Founders Capital
  • Mutua Madrileña acquired a 10% stake in Chipi, a Madrid-based startup that aggregates urban transportation services
  • Energy startup Ingelia raised €500,000 from EIT InnoEnergy
  • Brand management platform BeAmbassador raised €150,000 via equity crowdfunding platform Adventurees
  • According to El Referente, Spanish startups raised a combined €28 million in May 2019, across 13 investments

Startup exits 🎊

  • German electric scooter company Flash acquired Spanish competitor Koko. As a consequence of the transaction, Flash now owns 26% of all escooter licenses in Madrid
  • Idealista completed the acquisition of 100% of TerceroB for €5 million. TerceroB focuses on data analysis
  • Swiss company Euronovate acquired 100% of Spanish Víntegris to improve their digital certification solutions and increase its presence in the European market

  • BBVA to launch a startup incubator/accelerator in partnership with British financial services company Anthemis. The program will invest between €340,000 and €640,000 in fintech startups
  • Big Big Angels presented a new investment vehicle in collaboration with Lanzadera to invest in startups
  • Public entity ENISA published a report with data on the social and economic impact of its lending activity to Spanish startups and SMEs
  • El Referente interviewed Adrian Heredia, CEO of Byld, a company focused on helping corporates build new ventures and tech businesses
  • Madrid’s local government announced a €1.5 million fund to invest in Madrid-based startups

  • Xataka published a long profile of Lleida.net, the 24-year-old company that expects to reach sales of €13 million this year
  • Valencia-based Mr Jeff diversifies its portfolio with the addition of beauty and hairdresser services. The company expects to close the year with operations in 35 countries
  • As developer salaries increased significantly in cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, many are starting to open development centres in smaller cities. For example, Tiendeo in A Coruña
  • Viaempresa interviewed Xavi Beumala and Juan Margenat, co-founders of Barcelona-based adtech firm Marfeel. The company has more than 200 employees and expects to reach €25 million in revenue this year
  • Latam leading edtech platform Platzi officially launched in Spain last week
  • Galician fintech startup Coinscrap to offer its own debit card in partnership with Visa

  • EBay has teamed up with Banco Santander-backed fintech app Asto to offer cash flow loans to the online marketplace’s small business customers in the UK
  • Telefonica presented last week Movistar Plus Lite, its video-on-demand service to compete with the likes of Netflix and HBO. Also last week, Telefonica announced that it will launch 42 in Madrid, an education program for programmers and developers
  • BBVA to shut down Muno, an incubated project that aimed to create specific insurance products for freelancers
  • MyTaxi hired Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, former head of BlaBlaCar Spain, as its Spanish director
  • Real estate giant Metrovacesa to launch a crowdfunding investment initiative in collaboration with Sociosinversores
