  • Barcelona-based Red Points has closed a $38 million Series C led by Summit Partners. Existing investors Northzone, Mangrove, Eight Roads Ventures and Banco Sabadell also participated in the funding round which follows a $12 million Series B last year
  • Barcelona-based flower marketplace Colvin raised €2 million from Mediaset and MIP
  • Spreadsheet management solution Sheetgo raised $1 million from Caixa Capital Risc, Angels Capital and SeedRocket4Founders
  • Mr Noow, a Barcelona-based startup that has built a solution to make ordering easier in restaurants, raised €900,000 from Lanzame CapitalGermán Loewe, Iñaki Ecenarro and Andreas Mihalovits
  • Connected car platform Eccocar raised €495,000 from Grupo Valgine, CMC XXI, Pinama, Xesgalicia and Vigo Activo
  • Health startups RheoDX and Derma Innovate raised €350,000 and €367,000, respectively, on equity crowdfunding platform Capital Cell
  • Security startup FoxID raised €150,000 from Lleida.net

  • Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office requested 18 years in prison for former Gowex CEO and co-founder Jenaro Garcia. Garcia recently launched a new company, Gow2x, and the CNMV is not too happy about it, claiming that it can be (another) scam
  • Spain outperforms Europe by gender diversity in tech startups
  • El Confidencial wrote about 60 Dias, a Coruña-based tax recovery and expense management company. The company claims to help businesses and employees recover more than €30 million per year in VTA
  • El Mundo posted a profile of on-demand laundry company Mr Jeff and its co-founder Eloi Gomez. The company manages more than 1,200 franchises around the world
  • El Pais interviewed Pepita Marin, co-founder and CEO of We Are Knitters. The company reached €9 million in sales last year, delivered 120,000 orders and employs 28 people
  • Barcelona-based Fleksy’s AI keyboard is getting a store to put mini apps at chatters’ fingertips
  • Ecommerce company Minimalism disclosed its numbers and performance in Q1 2019. A great exercise of transparency
  • El Referente published an in-depth profile and interview with Sevilla-based hardware and AI startup Smart IoT Labs
  • Motorbike sharing company Ecooltra presented its financials for 2017. In that year, the company posted revenues of €2.7 million, a loss of €1.6 million and invested more than €3 million in buying motorcycles
  • Spotahome hired Angel Azcarraga (former Amazon and Microsoft employee) as CTO
  • Marketing4Ecommerce profiled Arengu, a Galician sign-up form builder and user onboarding SaaS company. The company claims to process 200,000 forms per day
  • Cabify acquired 2,000 VTC licenses from Vector Ronda (company managed by Rosuro Varo) for €30 million

Big company news 🏦

  • Netflix CEO Reed Hastings officially inaugurated the U.S. streaming giant’s Madrid Production Hub, its first European production center. Hastins said that he expects Netflix to generate 25,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country
  • Security company Kaspersky to open a ‘transparency centre’ in Madrid
  • Deliveroo to launch its services in 30 more cities in Spain before June. This will bring the total of cities to 60 for the UK company

Tech and policy 💂🏼

  • The founders of SeriesYonkis, a famous Spanish piracy website, could be sentenced to fines of more than €500 million
  • With the general elections around the corner, the four main Spanish political parties held a debate last week in Madrid to talk about their plans for entrepreneurship, startups and investors
  • In a recent interview, Podemos’ leader Pablo Iglesias suggested a new tax on Spanish telco companies to force them to provide broadband in most of the country’s rural areas. El Español looked into Iglesias’ suggestion and the current situation of broadband in Spain
  • US escooter giant Bird received 797 licenses from Madrid’s local government to operate in the city. Bolt (Taxify) also received 750 licenses to operate in Madrid; El Confidencial published a short profile of the Estonian company and its co-founder
  • El Confidencial published two long pieces about the escooter situation in Madrid, looking into how the local government is assigning licenses to the different players
