  • C5 Capital led an $18 million investment round into 4iQ, the cybersecurity company founded by
  • Engineering services startup Clerhp raised €1.5 million from Inveready
  • Valencia-based eSports startup Streamloots raised €500,000 from various investors
  • SP Control Technologies raised €350,000 from Big Sur Ventures, Bankinter and Bussy Angels

Startup news 💡

  • Glovo was in the news a lot last week, as the company held various meetings with a bunch of reports to talk about its recent performance as a business and its plans for the near future. The company will finish 2018 with €80 million in gross sales (20% less than expected), plans to launch ‘virtual restaurants’ and 'virtual supermarkets’ and also expects to hire up to 300 engineers in the next few months. Oscar Pierre, CEO and co-founder, admitted in various interviews that tech people only represent 4% of its workforce and that they should have hired more engineers since the early days of the company
  • FastCompany wrote a profile of Alfonso Cobo, a Spaniard that whose template app for Instagram Stories has been used more than 11 million times. Alfonso has now launched an agency aimed at this particular market, called Unfold
  • Personal finance management app Fintonic has teamed up with ecommerce behemoth Amazon to offer users in Spain interest free purchases on the local Amazon.es marketplace
  • According to Swedish VC Vostok New Ventures. Wallapop is now valued at more than $500 million
  • Lucas Carne and José Manuel Villanueva, co-founders of Privalia, are leaving the company two years after its acquisition by Vente Privee for more than €440 million
  • Novobrief published a profile of Barcelona-based real estate startup Kasaz: ‘We now have a real alternative to traditional real estate portals’
  • Parking app Valeet to pivot its business model to solely focus on B2B and corporate clients. Couldn’t find a blog post about it, but this was communicated via email to users of the service
  • El Referente published a profile of Fintup, a Madrid-based startup that provides financial services to consumers, trying to offer private banking services to less afluent clients

Big company news 🏦

  • According to a study from Statista, El Corte Ingles is the biggest fashion ecommerce business in Spain, with €390 million in sales in 2017, followed by Vente-Privee and Zalando
  • BBVA says that ‘digital customers’ (not sure what that means) buy more products from the bank than 'non-digital customers’. La Informacion also looked last week into BBVA’s technology services division, BBVA Next Technologies, which provides services to companies such as Dia, Cepsa or Ferrovial and which reached €4 million in sales last year
  • Mediapro announced the launch of U-Beat, an OTT (over-the-top) service that will be focused on the eSports sector
  • Kippel01 looked into the financials of Tesla in Spain: the company founded by Elon Musk had sales of €33 million in 2017
  • Orange is in negotiations with Amazon to include Prime Video into its television offering
