  • Ecommerce company Tiendanimal received €60 million in venture debt from Muzinich and LGT. The company expects to have more than 100 stores by 2020
  • Biotech startup Abac Therapeutics raised €16 million from various investors
  • Wuolah, a marketplace where students can buy and sell class notes, raised €1 million from various investors
  • In-restaurant ordering app Mr Noow raised €600,000 from Abac Nest, Seedrocket4Founders, Bankinter and other investors

Startup exits 🎊

  • Seat acquired car sharing platform Respiro. Inveready has sold its stake in the company in the process. Terms of the deal were not disclosed

  • Madrid-based VC firm Axon Partners invested in Latam dating site Mi Media Manzana
  • Santander InnoVentures joined $25 million Roostify funding round
  • Kippel01 interviewed Per Roman, partner at GP Bullhound. He mostly talks about his vision of the Spanish tech ecosystem
  • Lanzadera announced 15 new startups that are part of its newest batch. Associated to the Lanzadera, it’s also worth mentioning that its venture arm Angels Capital has changed leadership
  • Startup accelerator Eatable Adventures announced the launch of the Food Business Angels network
  • Byld is a new corporate venture builder that stems from Sonar Ventures
  • Repsol is looking for more startups for its newest accelerator batch

  • El Confidencial reported that Hawkers is in a bit of a tough time: several of its original founders have left, the company continues to look for a CEO and CAC (customer acquisition costs) have increased significantly. Could be just a bump on the road or something more serious
  • Cabify has a foundation with the goal of protecting the environment in Latam and Spain. The company also announced this week changes in its executive team
  • As it often happens in the world of gaming, it seems as if Barcelona-based studio Socialpoint is under a bit of pressure to come up with a new big hit following its acquisition by Take Two
  • Jesus Martínez published a profile of SaaS startup Redpoints. The company recently raised $10 million and could have reached almost $10 million in ARR in 2017
  • Typeform announced version 2 of its platform, with some big changes that co-founders Robert Muñoz and David Okuniev commented on
  • Glovo has signed partnerships with Zara, Intimissimi, The Body Shop and other fashion retailers to take care of some of their last mile deliveries. The company also continues its Spanish expansion, having just launched in Vigo, and plans to be available in the short term in Istanbul
  • P2P lending platform Comunitae is in trouble and could enter insolvency very soon
  • Building a fintech giant in sunny Barcelona: interview with ID Finance co-founder and CEO Boris Batin
  • El País interviewed François Derbaix, co-founder of Indexa Capital. He talks financial markets, roboadvisors and more
  • Zurich and insurtech startup CoverWallet to offer end-to-end insurance for SMEs
  • Proptech startup Cliventa says that it’s GMV (gross merchandise value) has surpassed the €35 million mark

  • BBVA-backed US digital banking startup Azlo readies for launch
  • eDreams officially announced that it’s moving its (fiscal) headquarters to Madrid
  • Mercadona recently bought a 13,300 square meter facility in Valencia to test its ecommerce projects
  • Last summer it was reported that Atrapalo was looking for a buyer to acquire Tiger’s stake in the company. It seems as if those plans have been put on hold
  • El Corte Ingles and Everis to create and manage the IT systems of Spain’s central bank

  • Interflora is responsible for two of every three flowers that are sold online in Spain

Tech and policy 💂🏼

  • Spanish government eyes tax benefits for crypto companies. The government is reportedly drafting legislation that it hopes will help woo cryptocurrency and blockchain companies to the country
  • More plans from the Spanish government to define a digital plan for the country. Nothing to see here until they come up with specific measures. We’ve been here before and not much came out of it
  • Spanish tax office Hacienda says it’s not considering a special temporary tax for Google, Amazon and other US tech giants
  • The Spanish government could also be considering a tax on transactions on mobile marketplaces such as Wallapop. These taxes would be based on the number of active users on these platforms… crazy
  • Online community Meneame is being asked to pay 7% of its revenues to Cedro. This doesn’t make any sense and the company has refused to pay
  • Taxi association Fedetaxi to sue Uber and Cabify. They claim that drivers for both companies should be treated as employees instead of freelancers
